Manchester United have been linked with Saul Niguez ahead of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United are interested in signing Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid when the transfer window opens at the end of the campaign, reports say. The Spain international’s future at the club is up in the air with the midfielder yet to sign a new contract, despite Diego Simeone’s side’s best efforts.

Manchester United have been linked with Saul for a number of years, with interest dating back to when he was a teenager.

The 25-year-old was actually turned down by the Red Devils during Louis van Gaal’s time at Old Trafford, while Everton also snubbed the chance to sign him earlier in his career.

Now, though, Mundo Deportivo say United are interested in bringing Saul to the Premier League this summer.

And, while the player has a massive £138million release clause, United believe he’s becoming ‘more affordable every day’.

Atletico Madrid currently have Saul tied down to the club until 2026.

But they’ve been trying to get him to commit his future - to no avail.

Manchester City are also interested in Saul.

Pep Guardiola has always loved coaching Spanish players and the Atletico star would certainly fit the profile of player he likes.

But if Atletico hold firm it would be interesting to see whether United make a move to secure the star’s future.

They do, though, want a midfielder.

And that’s irrespective of whether or not Paul Pogba leaves, with the France international’s future still up in the air.

He’s been widely expected to leave given how he pushed for a summer exit in pre-season.

But he could find himself short of suitors.

At Real Madrid, only Zinedine Zidane wants to bring the Frenchman to the club with Florentino Perez unconvinced.

And Juventus’ own hopes of snapping him up may hinge on what happens with the coronavirus crisis.

Meanwhile, United supremo Ed Woodward has vowed to back Solskjaer when the transfer window reopens later this year.

He said: “The recruitment department is working to a clear plan and philosophy, along with Ole and his coaching staff.

“Our focus is on bringing in a combination of experience and the best young players with potential to develop further, fusing graduates from our academy with high-quality acquisitions.

“Our recruitment process focuses on analysis and selection of players over the course of a season, with a view to the following summer transfer window.

“As part of the rebuild we see this coming summer as an important opportunity.

“There has been no shortage of investment in players over the past few years, with over £200m spent since Ole became manager.

“Our aim is to ensure that we continue to achieve consistency in quality of recruitment.

“Off the pitch it is important to note that the commercial elements of the club are geared to ensuring we have a self-sustaining model which supports investment in the playing side.”
