Manchester United star Marcus Rashford congratulated Leeds for earning promotion to the Premier League but quickly deleted the tweet.

After a 16 year wait, Leeds secured promotion on Friday as West Brom were beaten by Huddersfield.

Rashford wrote on Twitter: 'As a United fan I'm happy to see Leeds United back in the Premier League where they belong. Congrats @LUFC.'

However, the 22-year-old quickly deleted the tweet after some fans criticised him.

The two sides haven't faced each other often in recent years, with their last competitive meeting coming in the League Cup in 2011.

There is still a fierce rivalry between them, though, and that should make for two intriguing encounters in the Premier League next season.

The rivalry has its origins in The War of the Roses in the 15th Century, which was fought between the House of Lancaster (the red rose) and the House of York (the white rose). This led to an intense bitterness between the two areas.

They met in a friendly in Australia last year, with United winning 4-0 and Rashford among the scorers.

Rashford was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Manchester after he helped to raise £20million to feed vulnerable children.

Last month he wrote an open letter to the government calling for them to end child poverty in the United Kingdom. This led to the government deciding to extend free school meals for children during the summer holidays.

Rashford is set to be in action on Saturday when United take on Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley.

United, who are currently in fifth place, are also looking to secure a top four finish in the Premier League this season and are still active in the Europa League.
